ALPL and IFALPA staff and volunteers welcoming the global pilot community at registration. Captain Boyd Kelly was Master of Ceremonies at GPS 2018. He introduced Captain Ron Abel who opened the Symposium with a word on this year's GPS themes of Atypical Employment and Global Alliances, and the rapidly changing nature of global aviation and how it affects pilots today. 
"Global connectivity is all about reach," was the message from Keynote speakers Ms. Marion Hiriart, Principal Policy Advisor New Zealand Space Agency (MBIE), and Dr. Paul Fitzgerald, Adjunct Professor, McGill University Institute of Air & Space Law, who presented on Metal Neutrality and Competition in the Global Airline Industry.

The Globalization Discussion in the afternoon featured an address from Mr. Henrik Hololei, Director-General for Mobility and Transport of the European Comission, introduced and moderated by Ambassador Duane Woerth. Mr. Hololei underlined the dangers of aviation of going down the same road as the maritime industry. He stressed the importance of keeping piloting jobs in Europe to maintain a long life for the aviation industry. Mr. Aedrian Bekker, Managing Director of OR Consulting spoke on The psychology of pilot-customer interactions and the impact is has on customer satisfaction.
The evening Welcome Reception was graciously hosted by organizing Member Association, ALPL. IFALPA President Captain Ron Abel opened the evening and introduced Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel. Prime Minister Bettel offered an enthusiastic welcome to the global pilot community, and congratulated ALPL on their 50th Anniversary and IFALPA on their 70th. He discussed Luxembourg's unique position, both metaphorically and geographically, in the European aviation community.
Prime Minister Bettel was followed by ALPL President Captain Darrel Myers who provided a warm welcome from the organizing association.
Also present, among other local dignitaries, was Luxembourg's Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, Minister François Bausch, who will speak to open today's Plenary.
